性別受け[seibetsu-uke]

There is a unique type of uke. I think I should make a separate post on this although I always sum up any other types.

I am starting to doubt if the makers do this as a サービスシーン[service scene] since I seem to come across this a lot lately. But well, come to think of it, I have seen this kind of thing for ages. Anyway, if you see a male character who really looks like a girl, or occasionallycrossdresses, he is going to be a 性別受け[seibetsu-uke]. 性別[seibetsu] means gender.

Upon hearing this, you might be thinking of 性転換[gender-bending]. But no. 性転換[seitenkan] is to change a character’s gender like Kyonko(boy→girl) or Haruhiko(girl→boy) in the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. However, 性別受け doesn’t do this. They are strictly boys no matter how much they look like a girl.

Then why is this necessary? Because if you change a character’s gender, he won’t be uke anymore. Here is another way to change a gender, 女体化[jotaika]. 女体化 is to womanize his body, I mean, to make him physically function as a woman. やおい穴[yaoi ana] is a good example. Either, やおい穴 might be necessary no matter what, though…However, those fans who love 性別受け do not want to change his gender, but want him to be a boy no matter how much he looks like a girl. Crossdressing is preferable because it makes him look like a girl much more (but he is still a boy). Usually, when a character crossdresses in the series, he would be embarrassed. Yes, that is what turns fans on. Hard to believe it? I don’t think I am explaining this well, so feel free to ask me if you don’t understand.

lost colors

Then let’s see some example. If you have played Code Geass LOST COLORS, you must have seen Lelouch of trying a wedding dress. In this case, Lelouch is just wearing a wedding dress, not gender-bending. He is not acting like a girl, Luluko. Next is Fuchoin Kazuki in Get Backers. He is definitely a 性別受け because he really looks like a girl. The way he is also seems to be girly. But he is strictly a boy. Is Jubei really sure about this? Come to think of it, he cosplays a nurse in the series, and wraps his chest with a towel when he takes a hot spa with Jubei. なんで胸を隠す必要があるんだ? There is Tieria in Gundam oo. He also crossdresses in episode 8, doesn’t he? If nothing else, he looks like a girl!

Caught on, haven’t you? I already explained 女装少年[josou shounen], yes 性別受け has something to do with 女装少年. When such a shota-looking character crossdresses, he is going to be a 性別受け for sure. Ciel in Kuroshitsuji is a perfect example. His crossdressing killed some of my fujoshi friends actually. But remember, if a character crossdresses on purpose in the first place, he wound not count such as Watarase Jun in Happiness. Meanwhile, not only his looking, but the way he is seems to be girly shall make him 乙女受け[otome-uke]. Wolfram in Kyou kara maou?

If you want to bully your favorite uke-character, use 性別受け and humiliate him!

Wolfram is my favorite from Kyo Kara Maoh! hehe xD

Speaking of cross-dressing, there really are a lot of anime that include a male character with a hint of femininity. But like you are saying, it’s only turn on when the male characters are acting like regular guys, and they just had to do a cross-dressing due to whatever the reason in the episode.

I guess the perfect example can be found in the Fruits Basket, Yuki would be turn on while Ayame is not. I love Ayame for his sole character ^^;; I wouldn’t be turned on even if he wears a wedding dress xD

Ohhh! Gintama episode 24 (>.<)/ Who can resist Paako and Tsurako ^^!

What about Wolfram!?! I just love bishonen xD

Kyou kara maou is a bunch of fanservices! Like Wolfram’s crossdressing or Yuuri’s nudity.
There has to be a reason why they are crossdressing, otherwise it wouldn’t be a seibetsu-uke, but just a josou shounen.

Wolfram can’t be cosplayed by men, he is too bishie.
    You following Gintama?

Gintama!?! Again, how can you resist ドS 沖田 *kyah~* o(>.<)o!!!

It seems to me that Hijikata is becoming ドM lately! He used to be cool, but now…

      • Marie said,

The exact reason why Okita x Hijikata works! hehe xD

Learnt something new again! Hehe… hmm in general I don’t like cross dressing in BL very much… took me a long while to get used to Wolfram in his pink nightie. You’re spot-on about the bullying tho’ lol~ I thought those episodes with Ciel wearing a dress and his obvious embarrassment about being seen in one quite hilarious😄

    • bangin said,

It seems to me that they defnitely do this on purpose when a shota-looking character shows in crossdressing. And it peps up those fangirls who love Sebastian x Ciel…

When I see crossdressing in popular anime, I say “SQUUEEE!!!” and die of nosebleeds.😄
I loved when Yuuri saw Wolfram in those clothes…
And Ciel…I was soooo happy …*__*
My characters hate me for drawing them like that….
    But I’m their mother!😄

    • bangin said,

You can get your characters to crossdress no matter what they don’t do that. They can’t resist. lol

I have seen even Yuuri crossdressing somehow…Kyou kara maou is a bunch of fanservices.

    Let me tell you this,

When the first time I saw Lelouch in wedding dress in Lost Colors, I went WTF!? and his hazukashii mode is not moe at all. I can say the same for the cross dressing Ciel (because I watch Kuroshitsuji for the ever reliable Sebastian -and Meirin-). BUT when I find a fan art of Lelouch in twintails wearing dress and looks not ashamed at all (you know, his over self-confidence expression) I went whoa, tsunderee.. must.. stay.. sane.. *__*

That’s when I learned that cross dressing will never fail hitting your spot, its just depend on the matter of execution. Scary +_+

    • bangin said,

Do you know Lelouch awarded the looking-best-wedding-dress-character in a certain anime magazine?
Maybe this type of uke was invented for those who are not pleased with gender-bending. But there is the other way around, maybe.

This is a real coincidence that you made a blog about this word. I just watched this video.

Vocaloids? I can’t watch this video for some reason.

  7. 子犬 said,

Oh. Here is a reupload on YouTube.

    • bangin said,

I wonder if I should make a post on vocaloids…

  8. 子犬 said,

Do you follow the Vocaloid fandom? Do you have favorite Vocaloids? (`・ω・´)

    • bangin said,

No, but I always see vocaloids cosplayers at an event, so I know who they are. While I was not aware, other vocaloids were born like Kaito, Lin, Len, or Gakupo. I knew just Miku first.

  9. 子犬 said,

I knew only by Miku at first, too. I like the Vocaloids, but they sound so robotic it can be difficult to understand what they say. Len has the best voice anyway! It is good for metal. ^^

I think Hayate from Hayate no Gotoku fits the description perfectly!
Nagi is always making him cosplay as a girl (nekomimi included) and especially on the latest episode (second season ep 11) on which he is forced wear a maid uniform by a curse…
    talk about cheap excuses LOL!

    • bangin said,

I think the same happened to Kei-ichi in Higurashi.
That’s a typical excuse to make your boy a seibetsu-uke!
