[Cosplay] Captain Tsubasa
I am pretty sure you guys would doubt how old I am because I sometimes cosplay a character from such an old series. Speaking of a soccer anime, what would you think of? Even if you are very young, I guess the anwer is, yes, Captain Tsubasa[キャプテン翼]! If a baseball anime, you might think of Touch[タッチ]…oops, there’s Major[メジャー] or Ookiku furikabutte[おおきく振りかぶって]. If a basketball anime, it is definitely Slam Dunk. Like this, there are very few famous series when it comes to the sport anime. Especially soccer anime. In case you don’t know this anime, I shall upload the quick movie here. Please put aside the fact that this anime started the fire for fujoshis who really love shotakon.
Anyway, why do I cosplay such a sport guy? In real life, I am not really good at sport. I cosplayed a basketball boy like Rukawa Kaede, and this time I decided to cosplay him.
He is Karl Heinz Schneider[カール・ハインツ・シュナイダー]. Yes, as you can tell from his name, he is a German soccer player, and people call him a young emperor in Germany(西ドイツの若き皇帝). Nah if now, it must be ××王子[prince], but at that time a word 王子 wasn’t in the trend. Well, I used to play the Captain Tsubasa game a lot when I was a kid, and I really liked Schneider. He is really cool and passionate, but not childish like Hyuga Kojiro. He just keeps going to win, and somtimes he even becomes very cold to anybody else.
In fact, his father used to be the director in the team but for some reason he stepped down. And he got a divorce so Schneider lives with his mother and younger sister. Schneider sometimes asks his father to start with his mother again, but he always turns down…So Schneider is doing his best to win so that his father could come back to the field, and his family can reunite again.
Oh no, this is something I love! I always fall for such a melodramatic plot, why? At any rate, a friend of mine told me when he saw my cosplays. Why have I cosplayed a lot of student characters? He assumpted that I am wanting to be a student again, moreover my real school days was sucks so that is why I want to have a better school days in 2D[2次元]. Yeah he has a point! My school days in 3D[3次元] was not good at all, so I want to enjoy my school days in 2D…Oh no, that is why I cosplay such a young character! Even I didn’t know that. げー、俺って本当に2次元コンプレックスだったんだ！ええ、私の生きる世界は2.5次元ですが、何か？＾＾
The hardest thing in this cosplay was to make his hairstyle. This is really difficult to copy! Like Dragon Ball! Well I did my best…I really did.

I once asked this very nice girl who had the username “ilovetsubasa” (I love Tsubasa) if she meant CLAMP’s Tsubasa or Captain Tsubasa. She said, “CLAMP’s of course!” I guess some shows fade away with the times. This happens mostly with series that are based on current trends.
Some slightly older shows are still getting new fans, like Utena and Cardcaptor Sakura, but others you have to have been watching when it was new to like it. I wonder what popular current shows this phenomenon will happen with next? Even Code Geass isn’t safe…

Lily: Schneider is scouting Wakabayashi, I remember? Yes, Wakabayashi is a nice goalkeeper! I always used him when I used to play the game. Rather than Wakashimadsu, haha.

goodyfun: Captain Tsubasa is actually a long series. I have watched it by the time Tsubasa went abroad to join the tournament. Actually Tsubasa is married already though I didn’t know that. Is the writer/artist of Captain Tsubasa still the same? American comics that were first written and drawn in the 30s, 40s, 50s, etc. that still exist today are almost always written by family or friends of the original author. It is a practice that bothers many fans of the original work because the quality or style will change.
This sort of comic will be called things like “zombie”, as in it will never die/keeps coming back to life. It’s the main reason why Bill Watterson retired from writing Calvin and Hobbes.

goodyfun: Yes, it is the same, Youichi Takahashi. I wonder how old he is now. In Japan, that zombie thing doesn’t happen a lot, actually. Director Miyazaki’s son created the certain anime, but it has nothing to do with his works.

1st- your cosplay is awesome! you nailed it.
2nd- As I live in a soccer-fanatic country, captain Tsubasa anime was a big hit here around 15 years ago. I was a kid back then, and when playing a real soccer match, we tried to imitate the amazing “net breaking” drive shots hahahaha. We were too ingenuous back then and didn’t know about fujoshis and shotakon XD
I’m currently reading the manga, even though the drawings are not super detailed, it brings back so much memories, its awesome!

子犬: Captain Tsubasa was an early target for fujoshi, like how Star Trek, Starsky and Hutch, and Xena: Warrior Princess were targets for early Slash fanfic writers. 😀
bangin: I wonder if zombies will start appearing when Japanese comics get older? American comics have had more time to let it happen. It probably won’t because I find that Japanese comics are taken more seriously, so fans would get mad if their favorite comic was changed.

goodyfun: I don’t think so. Because if the original author passed away, the manga wouldn’t be able to continue anymore. But as for anime, it is possible. Anime staff can make a new plot so that the series can continue.

I don’t think it will happen either. But like I said earlier, the old American comics like the ones I mentioned are usually written by a family member after the original author dies, a son or a friend.
I think why the practice works in American comic strips is because American gag strips don’t have plots (except for dailies). They just make jokes. As for American graphic novels, that’s more complicated. Fans of comics like Spider-Man seem to not care about continuity between the various writers.

J anime like Matsuyame, Juna Misugi and Tsubase Ozore. Anime is very good. J like you. Anima climate has and attraction. There is one of classic japanese anime. There is very good Wakabayashi and Ken Wakashimazu.
