原作レイプ[gensaku reipu]
It’s not very uncommon that spin-off works(anime, novel, or live-action movie and drama) come out when the original gets popular. But this is a good thing or not, I mustn’t say. Even if it could satisfy general people, it wouldn’t even necessarily content the sheer fans as well…Mostly, those fans who really really follow the original might be dissatsified. Yes, when it goes too far, fans shall inslut the spin-off with this term, 原作レイプ[gensaku reipu].
原作[gensaku] means the original, and レイプ[raipu] means rape. Caught on, haven’t you? This is an insulting word for such a hideous spin-off which almost ruins the original. In other words, it’s like raping the original and destroying it. Fans are particular, so I don’t think it’s possible to create such a spin-off which could content all the fans of it. When something like visualized(like a movie or anime) becomes a novel, this doesn’t seem to happen. But the problem is the other way, I mean when the novel or manga becomes a live-action thing, this could seriously inflame fans. I am not going to take up anything to give you an example, but mention some points which make fans angry.
a. There are some new characters who never show in the original.
This might destroy the original’s image and fans really hate it when the new character stands out more than others. Also, when the plot has nothing to do with the original, it could be the same thing.
b. The character design or the cast don’t go well with the original.
This really happens when a live-action movie or drama version comes out. It would be a nightmare if an amateur becomes the lead such as Higura
c. The most important episodes or plots get eliminated.
Yes, this means the director doesn’t understand the original at all or merely misunderstands…so eventually it destroys the original. When such a long story becomes a film, a director has to omit some parts to edit. If this doesn’t go well, fans would be angry.
d. People who don’t know the original are quite pleased.
As I have said, fans are particular. The more the spin-off contents general people, the more fans dislike it. Also, the more the press advertises it, the more fans are not willing to accept.
e. The original’s author already passed away.
What if the author had seen this? Yes, fans would value the author’s thought, so there’s no way to know how the author feels about the spin-off if he/she already passed away.
There are a lot of threads where fans insult the certain spin-offs by using this word. If they don’t really like it, why are they doing this? Because they are sheer fans, so they end up seeing it no matter how terrible it is. I think it’s not a bad thing because people those who don’t know the original are pleased although I sometimes get disappointed to see such a spin-off…The point is, that anyone who wants to see and anyone who doesn’t want should be apart so that there will be no arguement.

I think Zero’s Familiar anime didn’t seem to conclude so well, that’s why the fans got disappointed.
khim: Yes, in fact when Death Note film came out, a lot of people got a good review while the fans didn’t seem to be happy.

I think Death Note wasn’t very bad, I’ve seen worse anime to live action adapation, but maybe its because when it’s come to gensaku reipu, I have a softer spot than the common otaku (my friends said so) ^^
I think it’s because for me it’s better for something exclusive to appear to the public mainstream, I enjoy talking with new fans who shared the same excitement, and the more the merrier for me, though actually there’s something frightening about that; the born of newbies who think they already knew it all just because they’ve watched the spin-off, ugh

After all, spin-off is spin-off, so it’s natural that spin-off doesn’t copy (or follow) everything of the original. I think it’s a good thing that more new fans come, however, sheer fans tend to leave as it gets too popular. At least, I have seen this a lot of times. Does this happen only in Japan?
If you start with the spin-off, and follow the original, that would be fine. You can discover more things. But the problem is the other way. Because those people who already finished the original, they would be harder on the spin-off.

I think 80+% of the time, fans will be displeased with a spin-off or adaptation… many of them have a mindset that’s too rigid, and they’re unable to accept the changes made to the original counterpart. While there are some series which can be really considered victims of 原作レイプ, I don’t think it’ll hurt if people will be able to see the good things of the adaptation, aside from those changes… =/

I guess it’s like when fans of a show hate it when it gets aired on Cartoon Network or somesuch because there’s a huge rise in n00b fans (にわか?) who pretend to know a lot but actually don’t… and may also tend to be younger and sillier.

usagijen: I know some Japanese friends who stopped being a fan because their beloved anime got too popular. I don’t get it. One of them can’t even endure to listen Hare Hare Yukai since he used to be a fan of Haruhi novels.
I am glad to see new fans even if they don’t actually know about Haruhi well. They all said the same thing, オタクはひねくれてるから [Otaku is particular.]

w: にわか fans are probably temporary so they might be bored and leave soon. I guess this is one of the reason why fans dislike it gets into the mainstream.

Yeah, a lot of American otaku really hate when the english seiyuu don’t match the japanese one.
That’s why we watch anime in japanese with subtitles, because it really is horrible!
Liike, one time in an anime I really like, Hagaren, someone said, “Konnichiwa Edowaado-san!” But in english they said “Hello Ed, how are you doing?”
Americans even change it reeeeally bad like the old anime “Testuwan Atom” by Tezuka got changed to “Astro Boy” here.

I really like Lelouch voiced by the English seiyu though I don’t know who does it. But Suzumiya Haruhi has to be voiced none other than by Hirano Aya.

Hello from Australia! Awesome blog you have (found it accidentally on google).
I was just talking with my friends the other week about how they were doing the American live-action of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Now there’s an actual term for it lol. For some reason, everyone has just agreed that the Live-action is definitely gensaku rape even though they haven’t seen it. I like to watch movies as just movies and not relate it to the original that’s why I don’t think I will watch the American live action of NGE since i’ll probably be very disappointed.
I thought that death note Live action was really good having read the manga first, then watched the live action and then watching the anime, i actually hated the anime.
I wonder if dubbing can be considered as gensaku rape since I believe that it’s raping the original. I stopped watching dubs ever since Nirvana raped Cardcaptor Sakura. They changed couple relationships to being relatives and once dubbed an episode that when you cut off all the commercials, it was only 10 minutes long.

I do not know how it actually is, but maybe I am not willing to watch it because no one can replace Asuka!
Well, since I am learning English, so sometimes I watch dubbed ones on youtube. But I end up feeling weird because I am too used to hear Japanese voice actors. Kyon and Lelouch sound quite similar. If I had not known the original, it wouldn’t have been such a gensaku rape.

Be loyal to the original, is what I always say!
I also hear a lot about people who are loyal to the original who get very mad when a movie, show, etc. that is based off of something, becomes more popular then the original. That is because people always want something to fight for.

I think it is really really difficult to satisfy all the fans, it”s almost impossible. But they need to understand the original as much as possible.
