ケモショタ[kemoshota]
If you happen to be a shota fan, you might be sure of this genre of shota. Well as you can see above image, kemoshota is a hybrid of an animal(dog, cat, lion, wolf etc.) and a shota-looking boy. It is an abbreviation form of ケモノショタ[kemono shota]. ケモノ means an animal…and if you love this, you would be a ケモナー[kemona-].
There are technically five types of ケモショタ.
a. A humanized animal(you can say 擬人化[gijinka]). Like above image, it’s like a hybrid of a young boy and an animal. In real life, a musical, Cats can count. This is a fundamental form of ケモショタ.
b. Obviously a human part and an animal part of his body should be separated. Like a merman or Centaur. But this is absolutely less popular.
c. Even though it is totally an animal, it speaks or walks like a human being. For example, Rakushun in Twelve Kingdoms or all the characters in Keroro Gunsou. Deep kemoshota fans love this.
d. A dressed shota-looking boy as an animal. If he wears cats’ ears or doll, it could count as a kemoshota. Some people might count the Suzaku in a cat doll. But actually this is less recognisable as ケモショタ.
e. If the animal has a shota-looking or is merely childish, it could be. Shamisen in the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi doesn’t count because the way it speaks is too old.
Although shota fans are everywhere, kemoshota fans are not so. Even in doujin comic markets, there’s not much kemoshota stands though there are kemoshota fans on the net. Umm, this is because they are too shy to come out of the closet? Also in BL circles, this kind of genre exists as ケモホモ[kemohomo]. Ugh, I don’t want to think about it. orz
ダメエリート [dame elite]
This is something relates to ヘタレ I have already explained here. ヘタレ is such a hopless guy (mostly) who is reluctant to do something. But in this genre, there is another classification as a matter of fact…that is ダメエリート[dame elite]. ダメ[dame] means no good. In general, such suckers are called ダメ男[dameo]. エリート[erito] means elite. So literally this is a mixture of ダメ男 and エリート. Wait, I need to learn about elite more…I shall find it out in my dictionary. orz Elite means a small group who are powerful or important because they have money, knowledge, special skills etc…Yes, this is it.
To get to the point, ダメエリート means a clumsy and hopeless guy even though he is a well-born, or a guy who doesn’t do good in the great company. You can simply picture a hetare guy in the elite group. Just hetare guys are everywhere, but how did this ダメエリート start? How come such a hopless could become one of the elite group in the first place? At any rate, this type of guys are awkwardly pathetic so that there’s almost no salvation. But even that, he tries to make it better…and goof up again. Although any other characters in the story are all smart, he is the only one hopeless. Comparing to just a hetare, dame elite is more awkward. But that’s why this could turn girls who want to help him on somehow…I assume.
Besides, ダメエリート doesn’t even necessarily mean a hopless worker in the great company, but a sucker in the great family. Even though he was born in the great family, he is a hopeless…Yes, this is ダメエリート, too. I think this could be easily found in anime or manga. Two major ones are Himura Kenshin in Rurou ni Kenshin and Tenka in Houshin Engi. But I can definitely think of Zetsubou-sensei! Though he comes from the great Itoshiki Family, he is in despair. His brother is a doctor, and sister is a master of flower arrangement…but zetsubou-sensei actually goofs around when he stays at his hometown, and plays with some girls…Anyone else? I am so sorry to say like this, but come to think of it, what about Lelouch in Code Geass? He is actually the son of Britannia Emperor, isn’t he? But he abandoned Britannia and started a new life as an ordibary student. Well, I know he is not a hopeless, though. Oh Arima’s father in His and Her Circumstance could be. He is a delinquent guy though he is well-born…Yes in this way, there is a deep story beside a ダメエリート.
In BL circles, this ダメエリート is quite popular as well, especially when the story takes place between two salarymen(リーマンもの). Mostly a 鬼畜眼鏡 is to be a seme and a ダメエリート is to be a uke, or a ダメエリート後輩[kouhai] is to be a seme and his 先輩[sempai] is to be a uke.

[Intermission] キュアメイドにシ徒、襲来 (A Raid upon Cure Maid-Cafe by the Last Servant)
If you happen to be in Tokyo, and a big fan of Evangelion, you would be sure that Cure Maid-Cafe is supposed to feature Evangelion themed service. Actually this is not their first time doing this, but this year must be more than last year since the Evangelion movie DVD has just released. I have been to this maid-cafe a long time ago, but there was nothing special but humble maids. So I hadn’t been here since then…
Meanwhile, I was looking for a new character I cosplay next time a while ago, and I decided to do Nagisa Kaworu for some reason. I am an オトメン, not ガチホモAnyway, just after I got the hairdresser’s to cut my wig, I got an e-mail from the certain writer. She was going to interview Cure Maid-Cafe, so asked me to go in cosplaying Kaworu. Well, I hadn’t tried my Kaworu’s costume out, so I had no idea how it went…But yes, I was on it.
悪魔デレ[akumadere]
Okay, this is still a new type of -dere. Yes, that is 悪魔デレ[akumadere]. If she is a real Satan or so evil like a devil, she could be labelled as this. Needless to say, 悪魔[akuma] means a devil. Mostly in this genre, a devil comes to you to make a contract. Thanks to(because of) this, you can get an awesome power, but you have to work for her, in other words, you could be her slave not knowing what you are getting yourself into. Having said that, she should make you alive under the contract…so no matter how she is cruel and mean, she would protect you when you get in danger. Would you like to say thank you? Go ahead, she would reject it coldly. This is a bit her tsuntsun side. Sometimes she would get dressed as a maid or other occupations, and serve you. But don’t get confused. She is moody but actually lonely…well, I must say there’s less chance to see her deredere side than any other tsundere girls. She is not a human being, so basically she is bored with human world…What intersets her is, yes, you. While you are alive, she takes care of you. But after you die, she would take you to the hell…And she would find another contractor. Yes, she is the devil!
Speaking of 悪魔デレ, I can definitely think of C.C in Code Geass. Umm, she gets dressed as a Goth girl and a junior high-school student using Nunally’s uniform. Yuti La in Heroic Age could be. And this is not anime, but in BLAN’s Dining(you can see this manga’s review here), a Shinigami(an Angel of Death) named Blan forces the protagonist to contest the contract which he has to find out criminals of cases he encounters. Blan is such a diminutive lolita-looking angel and always annoys him. In this way, 悪魔デレ girls mostly bother you. However, when she stays away from you, you would miss her. Yes, because you have a 悪魔デレ萌え[akumadere-moe].
I want to count Jikoku Shoujo, but too bad, she never falls in love with anybody.
ダンデレ[dandere]
This -dere things never end…What is coming this time??
Umm, I don’t think this is very different from クーデレ[coo-dere]. To get to the point, ダンデレ is an abbreviation of だんまりデレデレ[danmari deredere]. だんまり[danmari] means to be calm or to shut one’s mouth up all the time. And デレデレ means, you know, such a sweet attitude. She doesn’t speak at all mostly, but when there’s no one else but you two, she would be sweet to you. In other words, she would be in deredere-mode. I am not sure why this term had to be born. Now that there’s this term, it has to be different from クーデレ…What’s that?
Coo-dere girls have to be cool. Does カッコいい[kakkoii] come first when you hear “cool” in English? At any rate, I assume she has to show her something special side, far from other common girls. Look at Kawasumi Mai in Kanon. She is actually a demon slayer, so she can fight with a sword. Next look at Ayanami Rei, she can pilot the first Eva, in other words, Chosen One. Nagato Yuki in The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is actually an alien, and she can protect Kyon.
However, だんまり[danmari] doesn’t sound so cool if you ask me. She just shuts her mouth and show her dere-side when she is near you. Maybe ダンデレ is much easier to become than クーデレ if you want to turn someone you like on. Having said that, those mentioned girls could count as a ダンデレ because they don’t speak at all.
Umm, I can’t think of a good example. Such a common girl without any special skills doesn’t speak at ll…Ah, what if she is too shy to speak to him in front of everybody else? And what if she starts to show dere-side when she is near you? In that case, I can think of Kiyoura Setsuna in School Days. Yeah! She is not so special, but doesn’t speak at all…and she even kisses Makoto while he is sleeping. Okay, she is labelled as a ダンデレ.

鬼畜眼鏡萌え[kichiku megane-moe]
There’s no need to explain 眼鏡萌え[megane-moe, glasses-moe] now, but there’s a new mystery coming out. If he is really really cruel, remorselss, and does icy treatments, he would be classifeied as a 鬼畜[kichiku] which means a barbarian. And if he turns you on somehow, you would sure have a 鬼畜萌え[kichiku-moe]. To be honest, I know I am a ドエム, I can’t say I like this type of a person. At best, my point has to be tsundere, so I don’t like to be phisically punished(Of course not!).
But wait, if you look a kichiku person, does he happen to wear glasses? If yes, he would be classified as a 鬼畜眼鏡[kichiku megane]. Yes, a glass is a very important item for such a kichiku for some reason. Maybe that’s because it could give him a cooler and smarter impression, I suppose so. So mostly such a 鬼畜眼鏡 might be an expert on something. Like a professor at university, a boss at the big company, in other words, such a high-rank person. And yes, he enjoys doing cruel things to a certain person though he doesn’t show the real him most of the times.
Actually, this term stems from the same title BL game(see above image), but I feel this type of person has getting into the mainstream(oh why?). If you encounter someone who is voiced by Koyasu Takehito, watch out, more than 75% he could be possibly a 鬼畜眼鏡 such as Jade Cartiss in Tales of Fandom or Himuro-sensei in Tokimeki Memorial Girls’ Side. Ugh, how come Koyasu-san always voices such a kichiku megane? Though I know he is well-known as a 総攻め声優[souzeme seiyu].
主従萌え[shujuu-moe]
There’s often an old saying, the more secrets there are, the more people want to pry…and the stronger the bond between the two persons, the more it turns us on…I assume this theory has brought about this genre of 萌え[moe]…yes, that is 主従萌え[shujuu-moe]. 主従[shujuu] means master-servant relationship. Technically we can say 主従関係[shujuu kankei]. For some reason, I feel this kind of thing is getting popular more and more…come to think of it, we already have a butler cafe, don’t we? But then what is so special in this? Speaking of master-servant relationship anime, I can think of Zero’s Familiar, Kimi ga aruji de shitsuji ga ore de, Himawari!, and so on…and mentioning some certain pairs, Haruhi×Kyon, Shuurei×Seiran in Saiunkoku monogatari, Yasuhira×Shirogane in Haruka naru toki no nakade Izayoiki. If it gets doujin staff, it could be uncountable. Mostly, a master should be very cold and arrogant(yes, defintely tsundere), and a servant has to obey (his?)master…No matter how hard the master is, no matter what the master does to the servant, the servant has to respect and follow the master…
Having said that, the master actually cares about his servant more than anybody else, and the servant would be sure of that. That’s why the servant can endure the tough work his master gives. I daresay the master is even sure that his servant never betrays him, and the servant knows his master can’t do anything without him, he has nobody to help him. To anyone who doesn’t know this weird relationship, it seems to be very awful. But actually the two persons are bound by a strong bond…If you want to pry the deep secret, yes, you might have a 主従萌え.
Mostly in this kind of doujin manga, a master is so hard to understand and always swears him. But his servant shall do whatever he asks. When almost all the people around him leave him, and when he really really needs someone to be by him, only his servant stands by him…and finally the master shows his dere-side. Whoa, this is something like お約束 in this genre, though.
One more thing, in BL circles mostly a master would be uke, and his servant would be seme. There might be other way around, but only when they do “it”(maybe almost the last scene), the servant gets very aggressive. Yes, this is what’s-called 下剋上オチ[gekokujou-ochi, gekokujou conclusion].
フラグ [furagu]
Yes, I often hear this word lately, but everytime I came across this, I wondered what it was meant to be. フラグ[furagu] merely means a flag, but I assume when you come across it, you might be playing a bishoujo or otome game. When you pursue a certain girl/boy in such a game, you would definitely encounter some questions which enable you to go forward at the certain points. You need to choose a right answer, otherwise you would fail to pursue her/him. Yes, those questions don’t seem to be so important, but actually they are. Because if you don’t choose a right one, you can’t get a happy conclusion. The right answer must be hiding in the questions…that is フラグ[furagu]. If you can tell the answer you selected might be correct, you could say like フラグが立った[furagu ga tatta] to mean “successfully passed the point,” or “it is going to be okay.” But don’t get reassured until you have a happy ending!
Having said that, I feel フラグ things are actually used in real life, especially in real love. In the song 愛しの彼が振り向かない[Mikuru's version], she says フラグ twice like フラグを立てる[furagu wo tateru]. Literally it means to stand a flag, but something is missing. It should mean to stand a flag in order to make him/her come to you. To get to the point, it means to make passes at him/her. This is a bit old way to say this, but we used to say モーションをかける[motion wo kakeru]. So if a girl/boy whom you don’t know well speaks to you, don’t miss it, he/she would be trying to stand a flag in order to get you!
Technically, this kind of flag shall be called 恋愛フラグ[ren-ai flag, a flag of love] since this can be seen in the process of love. There’s a spin-off, 死亡フラグ[shibou flag, a flag of death not Death Note]. If you tell a premonition of someone’s death, watch out, there would be a 死亡フラグ on the person. Well, I think if I give you a better example, I shall definitely some detective/horror films, manga, anime or whatever. In Kindaichi’s File (yes, I know it’s too old), I used to have fun in guessing who gets killed first. Such a person always is evil-looking. When everyone in the episode gets together, someone accidentally mentions what happened there a long time ago…That chills the atomosphere so badly.
”Don’t mention it! Let bygone be bygone!“[←upon hearing this, Kindaichi tells something bad happened there and they do know about it.]
The one who says like above is absolutely going to die soon. Or the one who really gets surprised to hear it. Yes, a 死亡フラグ is standing on him. Next morning his carcass can be found in front of everyone else. Kyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! This is just a prelude for the nightmare…To be continued…
Nah, this is something like a お約束? That’s too cliched, though…Yes, we have seen this kind of フラグ everywhere. In a war film, when a man who is going to the warplace says, “If I could come back, we will get married(or open a small restaurant),” he never comes back since there is a 死亡フラグ on him. During the battle, when either of the two says, “You can leave it to me, just go!” or “I will follow you for sure, I’ll be fine!,” yes, there is a 死亡フラグ on him[for example; Titanic, Brotherhood]. In a yakuza film, when he turns himself in to stop being a yakuza, there is a 死亡フラグ on him since he gets stabbed just before he reaches to the police station.
Well in real life, if your friend rings you all of a sudden, and talks about the old memories, watch out, there might be a 死亡フラグ on him/her for some reason. No, don’t hang up! Keep talking! Get rid of the flag!
