ダンデレ[dandere]

dandere

This -dere thing never ends…What is coming this time??

Umm, I don’t think this is very different from クーデレ[coo-dere]. To get to the point, ダンデレ is an abbreviation of だんまりデレデレ[danmari deredere]. だんまり[danmari] means to be calm or to shut one’s mouth up all the time. And デレデレ means, you know, such a sweet attitude. She doesn’t speak at all mostly, but when there’s no one else but you two, she would be sweet to you. In other words, she would be in deredere-mode. I am not sure why this term had to be born. Now that there’s this term, it has to be different from クーデレ…What’s that?

Coo-dere girls have to be cool. Does カッコいい[kakkoii] come first when you hear “cool” in English? At any rate, I assume she has to show her something special side, far from other common girls. Look at Kawasumi Mai in Kanon. She is actually a demon slayer, so she can fight with a sword. Next look at Ayanami Rei, she can pilot the first Eva, in other words, Chosen One. Nagato Yuki in The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is actually an alien, and she can protect Kyon.

However, だんまり[danmari] doesn’t sound so cool if you ask me. She just shuts her mouth and show her dere-side when she is near you. Maybe ダンデレ is much easier to become than クーデレ if you want to turn someone you like on. Having said that, those mentioned girls could count as a ダンデレ because they don’t speak at all.

Umm, I can’t think of a good example. Such a common girl without any special skills doesn’t speak at ll…Ah, what if she is too shy to speak to him in front of everybody else? And what if she starts to show dere-side when she is near you? In that case, I can think of Kiyoura Setsuna in School Days. Yeah! She is not so special, but doesn’t speak at all…and she even kisses Makoto while he is sleeping. Okay, she is labelled as a ダンデレ.

    ダンデレが悪くないけど、やっぱりクーデレは僕一番好きなタイプ ^^

Do you think dandere and coodere could be applied more easily for guys? I sometimes find that those stereotypical cool-and-silent bishounen that kill many girls’ hearts fall quite easily into these categories… or would it be inappropriate to call them that?

I’m sure there are truckloads of girls who would LOVE to have a coodere boyfriend.

Loli Clare from claymore? Although I think she was actually physically incapable of speaking…

Coodere boys make good boy friends? *pretends to be one*

I think almost all Claymores are more coo-deres to me…. Dan-dere, I guess any quiet, shy character can be a dan-dere… actually, if you think about it, every single anime character who has some sort of sweet side can be a XXX-dere or some sort. If you don’t have dere, you won’t have love of the otaku, and thus no money made. So in order to make a best-selling eroge/anime/manga, a smart creator will fill his work with all sort of XXX-dere characters, so that the otaku will line up for special editions at COMIKET, and sleep on the side walks when the first SE DVD is released.

Dere Dere… secret to the Otaku Wallet.

I was watching the School Days OVA a few days ago, and thinking about what to call Setsuna’s type, since she’s my girl of choice in School Days… dandere is probably one of my favorite -dere. Fujino Shion from Hatsu Inu might fit the type too :).

khim: Good example, how could you find out one from Negima? Shinobu? You mean the Shinobu in Love HIna?

    double: ふふ、綾波派だもんね。僕もどっちかといえばクーデレの方が好きかな^^

w: Yes, the same goes to guys. Speaking of dandere and coo-dere guys, I can think of Tsukimori Ren in Kin-iro no Corda, Hiei in Yu-Yu-Hakusho, Youjiro in BKI…I can’t even count. And there’s another term to describe this type of guy. I will make a post soon.

    One: 懐かしい!すごいところから出てきましたね。^^

Ruki: It doesn’t matter if she is not capable of speaking since she is handicapped.
Umm, I am labelled as otomen. It’s too late to change myself into coo-dere.

Avplaya-san: That’s well put. The more xxxdere girls, the more fans it could get.
If dandere girls are too shy to speak, it could count Mikihara Megumi in Toki Meki Memorial and Otonashi Meru in Zetsubou-sensei. I haven’t seen Meru’s dere side.

Lily: Setsuna speaks to Sekai only…she is not that talented like Ayanami. The only one remarkable thing is she can speak French. lol

  9. khim said,

well, both are my favorite chara in both series (*^^*)

Love HIna is a bit nostalgic to me. ^^

  11. kotome said,

oh I see, so the dandere is the typical nice and normal shy girl, while the coo-dere is the ‘cool’ and special silent girl… Thanks for the explanation m (_ _) m
So in that case..hyuuga hinata would be a dandere? …well, i can’t think of any other dandere right now .

  12. bangin said,

I personally think shy girls could be dandere rather than cool girls. i don’t know how other people feel…

We can easily find good examples if we count coo-dere girls, though. ><

  13. Wija-chan said,

Kotomi would be dandere, I suppose? :’P (CLANNAD)

    • bangin said,

Yes you’re right. She is kind of dandere. But I think she still speaks a bit much as a dandere.

Yes, homuhomu could be. But she still speaks so so.
